The HP Interhouse Promptfest has begun! Prompts are open for claiming until September 7. And people, there are well over 300 prompts to choose from. Seriously. Go and have a look. I didn't contribute any prompts, but lots of them look intriguing. I'm not sure how I'll pick a favorite!

The Ravenclaws on reddit have put together a new cookbook of their favorite recipes!

(The web page's interface is a little tricksy. Be patient. Try clicking the full-screen icon.)

I haven't tried any of these yet, but some of the names look intriguing, particularly "Vampire Protection Dip." Who among us couldn't use more protection against vampires? See, that's why you need Ravenclaws in your life. We're so practical.

This picture keeps appearing on my Facebook feed. For those of you on mobile, it's a little picture of a person (man?) with long black hair, wearing a dark-colored suit with cuffs, holding hands over eyes. The caption says, "You deserve to be happy." It's an ad for inexpensive therapy.

Let's leave aside the disturbing fact that Facebook's algorithm has diagnosed me as needing inexpensive therapy. Whenever I spot this ad out of the corner of my eye, it reminds me of young Severus Snape. Well, no, the hair's too good. It reminds me of a cosplaying young Severus Snape. And who deserves to be happy more than Severus Snape?

So if you feel like it, in the comments, write a 100-word drabble about Severus Snape in therapy. Bonus points if he doesn't exactly want to be there.

We'll soon have our own Hogwarts on the West Coast!

We visited Universal Studios in L.A. last week and got a big surprise:

I saw these on Tumblr tonight. I don't know how new these are to the internet, but I simply love them and wanted to share with someone.

Should I attempt to print them? How should I handle the minor arcana in that case?

I hope you had a chance to enjoy [ profile] melusinahp's "One Prompt, Many Writers" challenge last week. She solicited prompt ideas on her journal, and the prompt with the most votes was to be used in a drabble of less than 500 words.

I just put mine up on TPP, but I thought I'd share it here, too. The world needs more HGRL.

Special thanks to [ profile] teddyradiator, the best alpha and all-around friend.

“To burn with desire and keep quiet about it is the greatest punishment we can bring on ourselves.”― Federico García Lorca, Blood Wedding and Yerma

Remus reached across the restaurant table and gently took hold of Hermione’s hand.

“All right, one more time.” He laid the red chopstick across her palm. “The bottom stick is held like so. Keep it steady. Then you place the second stick here … and hold it with your fingertips, like this.” He lingered a moment, tracing the soft flesh where her thumb and finger met. Her hand lay curled in his, a bird with a long, delicate beak.

Absorbed, she bent her fingers until the chopsticks touched. She flexed experimentally. “All right, I think I have it.”

“Now the true test.” He slid his hand away, nodded and gestured. She picked up her bowl the way he had showed her, the dim sum laid atop a snowy mound of rice. He watched not her hand, but her eyes, so it took a moment to interpret her impish look of triumph—she had simply skewered the dumpling with both sticks.

“Success,” she proclaimed, taking a healthy bite.

He laughed and sat back. “Don’t try that in China – it’s considered bad manners,” he teased.

“I can imagine,” she replied after swallowing. “How long did you live there?”

“Oh, eight months, I think. Mainly stayed in Hong Kong, working odd jobs where I could, and then I ventured out into the rural provinces.”

“Did you miss England at all?”

He concentrated on his own bowl. “I missed some things,” he replied smoothly. “Mattresses with springs. Honeyduke’s chocolate. Apothecaries with potions I recognize. That sort of thing.”

“And any … people?”

He caught the tone in her voice, and his eyes quickly raised to hers. Her eyes did not dart away, but held his gaze for a lingering moment.

Here, at last, was his opening, the chance to say what had been on the tip of his tongue all night. He could finally bridge the space between them. He felt sure she was waiting.

But over her shoulder, in the window behind their booth, the waxing moon showed its face like a hateful maitre d’ not at all sorry to intrude on an intimate moment. The moon: his first enemy, his eternal burden, his constant companion throughout his travels after the war. Already he could feel its intrusive power, coiled inside him, primed to take over sinew, muscle, bones, and will.

No woman should have to intersect her life with his. He would never make that mistake again, not even for her, Hermione, the woman who knew him so well; the woman he had loved, in some fashion or another, since her third year at school.

He took a deep breath. “Well, my son, of course,” he replied. “My Teddy.”

She dropped her eyes. “Naturally,” she agreed, laying aside the chopsticks. As she picked up her fork, Remus hitched up his most convincing smile and asked about work.

I've been writing a short story that is supposed to include a modicum of adventure, involving a shady character who wears black all the time and is renowned for his bad temper.

But I have hit a roadblock. A secondary character, who is Not What He Seems, will not do what he's told in the third act and become the antagonist.

Me: ..... Now in this scene, you try and kill Severus Snape.

Secondary character: [Looks Snape up and down] Who, me? Fight that guy? I'm just a punk kid in an ironic t-shirt.

Me: No, I know that's how you seem, but underneath, you are a trained wizarding assassin! It's all set up!

Secondary character: [Embarrassed to be witnessing my meltdown] Sorry, lady, I have a bus to catch.

Secondary characters are like dogs. You get really mad there are muddy pawprints all over your sofa, but when you trace the problem back to puppyhood, you realize you're the one who neglected to whack it with a newspaper.

Thanks to [ profile] micawber, I've been wasting precious, precious beta time playing with the Harry Potter Character Generator.

My favorite character so far:

This seductive woman is a Gryffindor. She has slitted gray eyes that
are like two silver coins. Her thick, straight, red hair is worn in a
style that reminds you of a river. Her skin is cream-colored. She has
small ears and large hands. Her wand is elegant, made of elm, and has a
core made of kelpie heartstring. She understands the language of
canines. Her father was a muggle, and her mother was a witch.

One of my coworkers is 38 and is gunning for our boss's position. "I want to become a manager by the time I'm 40," she told me. To that end, she's giving herself a year to make it happen here, or else she will move on.

I admire her for having ambitious career goals. But I've never wanted to manage others. Like Dumbledore, when I get too much power, it goes to my head in negative ways and I tend to make life miserable for those around me. I'm better off in my specialty field. My goals involve getting very competent at the job I have now.

So, here are all my goals for 2013:

The List )

At last, the story has gone live!

As I said, [ profile] teddyradiator and I wrote a HGSS multichap story in response to a set of horrifically challenging prompts suggested by [ profile] droxy. Teddy was under obligation to write the fic, but had had absolutely no inspiration and didn't know where to begin. I found a workable solution to the prompts, and then when Teddy was all jolly and vulnerable, I casually wormed my way into co-writing the thing, heh. Four months and fourteen chapters later, here we are: Droxy's Folly.

Per the terms of the [ profile] het_bigbang challenge, it's archived on AO3. Teddy has also been invited to post it on TPP, which she has begun to do. Since it's a finished work, have no fear about reading it there. I'll also start posting it on ff.n next week, since I still have confidence in the place, as strange as it seems.

All my love goes to [ profile] toblass for stepping up to be our beta! She put in a great deal of time and energy, and our story was much better for it.

Also, thanks to het_bigbang, the talented [ profile] slr2moons took on the challenge of creating an illustration for Droxy's Folly! And it's a beautiful piece of work - so evocative, I just want to crawl inside and live there. I'll give you the link, but be sure and visit after you've read the fic, because the illustration contains a minor spoiler.

I had the best time writing this, you guys, and we're both overjoyed at the reviews so far. Droxy even came out of her enforced hiatus from the internet to read and comment last night!

So last spring, [ profile] het_bigbang opened. No exchange, no prompt list - just a minimum word count, and any fan base is permitted as long as the main pairing is het. I showed the announcement to [ profile] teddyradiator and said hey, this sounds like just your bag. You should participate - or, maybe we should, you know, collaborate on something. She squeeeed so loudly, I could hardly hear myself type! Next thing I know, we were both knee-deep in chapters and summaries and to-do lists on Google Docs.

Dramione is definitely far from my OTP, but my spare time (I think I already told you) I am a validator for Hawthorn & Vine so I spend part of every other week in that world.

There are some interesting eighth-year themes that are common to that pairing. One I keep running into is Head Boy Must Room With Head Girl. Usually, the excuse is that Hermione and Draco have returned to finish their education, but oh no! What to do? All the beds are full! Before you know it, they are thrown together in their own cozy suite, where sparks fly and hilarity ensues.

To my way of thinking, this idea is almost as implausible as the Marriage Law.

Another of the drabbles I wrote as an entry in the recent Snupin_LDWS:

Title: Arresto Momentum
Characters: Severus Snape, Remus Lupin

- - - - -

“When were you happiest here?”

Severus squinted at the sun-dappled lake. “I think you know.” He turned, and Remus had moved so near, and it was as natural as breathing to finally close the distance and kiss him.

Past and present melded into a dizzying moment, and the world narrowed to this time, this place; the boy he had lost, and the man who had come back.

Then, with eyes clenched shut, he pulled away. Fate could not be so kind to Severus Snape.

“And what about you, Lupin?”

Remus’s hands gently captured his face as he returned the kiss.

Title: Howl
Summary: When life hands you feathers, make owls.

I'm posting this a second time because I couldn't get lj and Google Docs to play nicely together before. Thanks Teddy and Trev for the Brit-picking. I wish I could hear it in Trev's voice ...

- - - - -

Remus walked into the gloomy owl office on the last Hogsmeade weekend of the school year. One round desk was lit by the skylight above, and here - besides dozens of post owls - stood the building's only other occupant.

"Get out, Lupin," growled Snape.

"It's a public building, Snape," replied Remus easily.

"Out, or I'll hex your bollocks off!" Snape seemed ready to shove him bodily out the door.

"What the hell, Snape? You can't just ..." Remus followed Snape's gaze upward and saw a tawny owl swoop inside. Clenched in its claws was a bright red envelope. The owl landed and ostentatiously stuck out a foot.

At the look on Snape's face, Remus clumsily warded the office door. "Better get it over with," he said bracingly.

The packet flew open and a slurred male voice shouted them down.

Both boys clapped their hands over their ears. Every owl screeched horribly and made a break for the skylight. The resulting owl-scrum blocked all the light.

In the silence, Remus's ears rang painfully. He lifted his eyes, expecting the worst. But to Remus's surprise, Snape just shrugged.

"My parents had to pay school damages yesterday. I knew he'd send a Howler, so I bribed our owl to meet me here. Fewer witnesses."

"I won't tell anyone," Remus swore.

"You better not, or I'll hex your bollocks off."

"You said that before," smiled Remus. "Look, it's raining feathers. Let's transfigure them into owls now that you lost Hogsmeade all theirs."

Snape turned away, but not before Remus caught his smirk.

that prompt claiming is open until 11:59 pm on Monday, July 2nd, so this coming Monday. That means there are only four more shopping days until prompt picking closes.

So far, we've gotten 25 claims which is fantastic, but I'd love to be able to post at least one a day every day if possible. So, if you were putting off picking your prompts, now's the time to do it! You can claim your prompts here. There are plenty open for fic (with only 2 closed so far) and all of them are open for art.

Feel free to pimp the comm too.

Hopefully this will be a very happy and hot Hallowe'en for us all.

My next drabble in a short series.

Title: Status Quo
Characters: Severus Snape, Remus Lupin

- - - - -

The Great Hall’s sky glowed with the last rays of an autumn sunset. Beside Severus, Remus looked pale. How much longer would he stay?

Over dessert, Albus leaned near, spoke quietly. Remus casually rose. His eyes caught Severus’s. For an instant, Severus felt the brush of fur.

Was this to be the way of it? Lupin, a danger every month? Dumbledore, oblivious to  consequence? But why shouldn’t they flirt with disaster. Severus will see to it. Severus will brew the potion that will keep a thin veneer of normality stretched tight over the well of madness.

Suddenly, anger bloomed red behind his eyes. How like his entire life. The world sleeps soundly while he labors in darkness to keep it safe. And nobody credits it - not the man who holds his leash, nor the man who used to hold his heart.

“My boy,” whispered Albus, “people are staring.”

Wow! I didn't see this when it was posted. Even though it's somebody's idea of an April Fool's joke, I would totally watch it.

The unthinkable has happened. I am participating in a Snupin Last Drabble Writer Standing challenge.

Are dogs mating with cats? Is it raining frogs? Because I never thought the day would come when I would share my own spastic efforts at writing fiction with the internet.

Anyway, whatever. It's not all about me. Please go here and support / enjoy Week One of the Snupin LDWS. If you join the community, you can even vote for your most and least favorite ...
