Thank you, everybody, for your birthday wishes. Thanks especially to [livejournal.com profile] teddyradiator for the very sweet testimonial, and to [livejournal.com profile] rivertempest for the very sweet virtual gift.

I had a nice day! The time I spent by myself, I joined Pottermore and played the whole Philosopher's Stone segment. This is because, apparently, the birthday I celebrated was my tenth. :-)

No, not really. It's a cute site, very imaginative, with a satisfying amount of background material to read. I think I'll noodle about in it some more when other books are up and ready to play. In the meantime, I'm NimbusOwl2335, if anybody wants to add me as a friend.

Had hoped to be sorted into Ravenclaw, but the Sorting Hat had other ideas! So you're looking at a brand-new Gryffindor instead. I've read about people who, when they got sorted into Houses they disliked, would delete their accounts and start over again, hoping for a different outcome. Me, I might have been tempted ... but Gryffindor is a fine second choice; I won't bother.

Funny enough to share: How to have a one-night stand

First, sleep with someone. They could either be someone you know or someone you don’t know. It could also be someone you sort of know. Just make sure that it’s someone.

Then, wake up in the morning and realize that someone you know or don’t know or sort of know is in your bed. Register that that is strange. Almost against nature. Play a game where you pretend like you’re a huge creep and stare at their face while they sleep. Acting is fun!

Check to see if you have an embarrassing book on your bedside table: It’s Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince. Eff.

Carefully get up so as not to wake the person next to you and quickly switch out Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince with one of your two unread copies of Infinite Jest. Throw Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince out the window but note where it lands so you can pick it up later.

Read the rest here. I could sort of relate: in the unlikely event one-night stand were to ever happen to me, this is exactly how the book thing would go down.

On Reddit this week, we've been collecting what we hope will soon be the definitive list of Harry Potter fanfiction sites.

Can you think of any we've missed?

* Well, with great promotions come great responsibility. For the first time in my life, I am in a job where I have to work at home some evenings just to keep up. Normally, I would disapprove, except this is really a good opportunity, and ... um, they're paying me pretty well. On the downside, I'm reading nothing but reports on cauldron bottom thickness and the like. Dry as hell.

* Muchas smoochas to [livejournal.com profile] droxy and [livejournal.com profile] literaryspell for the cute blue dragons!

* One of the smallish posters left over from the birthday party is a close-up picture of Severus and Draco, with Hermione Granger hovering in the background. An inexplicable trio for a canon poster, wouldn't you say? However, it reminds me powerfully of one of my favorite triadfics, [livejournal.com profile] laurielover1912's  The Authority of Truth. So now it's up on my bulletin board where I can see it all the time, and nobody outside of my head (and now my flist) knows why.

After my daughter's Harry Potter-theme birthday party, I no longer have any doubt that Lord Voldemort could be defeated by a bunch of teens.

Two girls made the authentic Hagrid cake. isn't it impressive? The day before, they actually argued over the exact shade of pink to make the frosting. Ravenclaws! Am I right?

So, we played three games.

Please don't take offense - it's all i can think to call them. must be punchy.

today is the harry potter birthday party! i made these horcruxes out of thrift store finds.

what they lack in class, they'd make up for in good humor.

Almost every HP-themed scavenger hunt idea we found today on Google is geared toward the under-12 crowd. I could find very little in the way of help for a teenage HP scavenger hunt. But my kid has told her guests we will have a horcrux scavenger hunt. In fact, it's Facebook-official. So the groom and I are going to rise to the challenge.

Here's what we know:

I have a new 40-something coworker, and she is already distinguished in my mind because she likes Harry Potter. I don't know about you, but in my little world, such a woman is rare.

We all went out to lunch today, and I mentioned that my daughter had settled on a theme for her birthday: Harry Potter Quincinera.*

The new coworker said, "Omigod, I love Harry Potter. Absolutely love." Just like that! Right out loud! Her potential as a friend rose exponentially. However, she's not quite as HP-obsessed as I am. For one thing, she hasn't read the books. "I'm saving them," she says. For what?? That's unfathomable. Still, it's a start. And if anybody can exhort her to get moving on the books, it's me.

*Remember she was trying to choose between them? Well, she went ahead and combined them. I asked her what she envisions such a party looking like. "Fluffy dresses, Taco Bell and a Horcrux scavenger hunt," she replied. This is why I like her so much. In other news, we have to make seven or eight** Horcruxes between now and February 18 and prepare to hide them throughout the neighborhood. So don't go anywhere.

** Do you think I could talk a boy into painting a lightning bolt on his forehead and skulking around a few streets away from here, waiting to get caught?

My daughter's 15th birthday is coming up, and she's trying to settle on a theme for a party here at our house. Last night at dinner, she and her friend Jessica kicked around the idea of a Harry Potter theme, possibly combined with a movie marathon. The groom and I waxed enthusiastic at the idea. We could turn the front door into Platform 9 3/4! We could sort the party guests into houses! He and I immediately got into a sidebar discussion about wiring a Sorting Hat with a microphone. In the process, we probably scared away our client, i.e., the birthday girl. You remember how scary it used to be when the adults in your life Got Hold of a Good Idea.

What's up with you on this fine Sunday? How about doing some web-surfing with me?

* The incomparable [livejournal.com profile] ladyapplesauce posted a beautiful fanmix set dedicated to Remus and Tonks over in the [livejournal.com profile] remus_lupin community. There's some beautiful music posted. Even the narration is luminous. Check it out.

* It looks like HP fans are taking over some acreage in reddit. First we had a Harry Potter page, then a subreddit dedicated to fan fiction. Now there's even a Snape subreddit. It's not as organized as lj's community, and the group as a whole seems younger than we are, but I see strong signs of obsession dedication among the members; could get interesting.

* Although it's well past Christmas, [livejournal.com profile] teddyradiator is posting her Christmas fic, Choose Something Like A Star, on Ashwinder this month. Chapters are going up as fast as I can beta them! It's a lovely, sentimental story about getting a second chance at life and love. Even if you read this on Teddy's lj page over the holidays, be sure and check it out, in honor of Severus Snape's birthday tomorrow.

For those of you following [livejournal.com profile] teddyradiator's fantastic story Lay Me Low, take a look at this gorgeous manip by [livejournal.com profile] bulletimescully.

I can't get over the look on Hermione's face. It's just how I envisioned the first chapter.

In case you haven't seen it yet, here is the promotional brochure for Deathly Hallows 2, which is being distributed to SAG members voting in the upcoming awards. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] mickawber_fics, for generously scanning the booklet's pages for our enjoyment!

* Thanks and a big *squish*  (whatever that is!) to [livejournal.com profile] rivertempest for sending me a virtual gift of a big blue spider. It was really sweet, my dear! But I still will have to be cleaned up after your current fic is finished ...

* Mugglenet has posted deleted scenes from Deathly Hallows Pt. 2. My dear Lupin shows up for only about 6.5 seconds ... and he's hugging my rival, that detested interloper, Tonks ... but it's totally worth it.

* Yesterday at work, the office craft group got together for lunch. And someone brought along a WIP - an inexplicable affair involving raffia, autumn-colored flowers, a glue gun, and a cinnamon-scented broomstick. I'm sure it's going to be pretty, but at the time, all I could think was, Madame Hooch would never allow scented broomsticks on the Quidditch pitch. I get HP on the brain at odd moments, and I can't confide in anybody but you people.

* Borrowing from [livejournal.com profile] droxy and [livejournal.com profile] savine_snape, I made the above avatar at Anime Me. It actually looks a whole lot like me ... does that mean I have a cartoon face?

My darling groom of 23 years supports my hobby of HP fan fiction, likes to hear all about it, likes to debate the finer points of an author's plot as I describe it, but has politely refused to read any fanfic himself.

"It's obviously interesting to you," he says, "but I like the series so much, I don't want to read about things that could never have happened in the original story line." Born for canon fic, this boy is.

But tonight I finally found a work that seems to have what he's looking for - a solid, T-rated adventure story with no AU and no implausable ships. He got so interested, I signed him up and put the story on his new Alerts page. He's sprinting through it even as I write.

See ... it allllll starts with one story. Soon, he will become hooked like the rest of us ...

Okay, this made me laugh out loud and satisfied my mood for meta: Death Becomes Her. [link fixed] Short and funny. Go and read.

I've been conversing with someone on Reddit who ships Remus/Tonks. Which is a nice pairing, and I've nothing against it, but I'm feeling just a bit threatened all the same. Tonks, in my mind, is kind of a flaky and doesn't deserve my dear Remus. She just can't hold a candle to Hermione. (Gosh, Jules, project-much?)

Anyway, this Redditor challenged me to read Consequences in order to prove her point about Tonks' potential. It's a well-paced, engaging NTRL, with strong characters, and it appears (at least so far) canon-compliant, which is kind of a literary bonus. So I recommend it, too.

Didn't I already read this in a fan fiction? :-)

This will make the most sense if you've seen Mean Girls, of course!

Especially if it's about Harry Potter! I've seen this on various pages, but I lifted it from voxangelus.
