(no subject)

My husband is ripe to get into HP fan fiction, I just know it. He won't ever be a big shipper, but the action-adventure-y stuff is right up his alley. He already likes Harry Potter, and for some reason is mad for all those angsty supernatural teen dramas like Vampire Diaries and Teen Wolf. It's just a matter of finding the right hook and then he'll be ours. Ours!

Unfortunately, I don't think we'll hook him through some sort of innate attraction to Severus Snape. (I say unfortunately because, y'know, that's about all I read.)

Groom: I'm beginning to like the relationship here between Snape and Hermione Granger. I still have trouble with the age difference, but ...

Me: (Judiciously) Sure, I understand. Lots of people actually don't care for the pairing. (I almost told him about Snupins, but making him read slashfic might result in a step backward in our cautious progression.)

Groom: But what I don't get is, why Snape at all? He's such a nasty, cruel character.

Me: (Grinding my teeth) Well, some of us think he was just misunderstood. For instance, in "The Prince's Tale," he is quite guilt-ridden, with a broken heart, having had a hand in the death of his first love. Then Dumbledore snags him, and he's forced to play the role of a double-agent, doing everything Voldemort and Dumbledore tell him. It isolates him; he's alone and friendless in enforced solitude. He can't confide in anyone. Half the Order believes he's a bad guy; he is terribly misunderstood. And in the end, his only reward is a horribly violent death.

Groom: Yeah ... (I almost have him.)

Me: We Snape fans proceed from this point to try and write him the way we see him - as a character who is more complex and more three-dimensional than Rowling wrote him.

Groom: Okay, I can see that. But Hermione?

Me: (Giving up.) Would you prefer Remus Lupin? ...

So close... so close!

Do you think he would respond well to humorous (barely romantic) situations with Snape/anyone? Just to get his feet wet, of course. ;)

One of the stories I'm giving him right away is your "If The Present World Go Astray." Maybe I should ask for more recs here, what do you think?

[identity profile] rivertempest.livejournal.com 2012-08-05 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! Thank you!

But yes, more recs would provide a pool you can draw from - have them include all genres (with and without happy endings), different pairings, etc.

I recently read a Snape/Sirius one that I was VERY impressed with and it wasn't overtly sexual, but also dealt with depression and PTSD. Very realistic and everyone remained in character.

I can understand where he comes from. I, too, have trouble with Snape/Hermione, largely because of the age issue. And I don't like slash. So generally, that leaves a small pool to pick from -- sometimes the dreaded OC. There are quite a few good stories at Occlumency at Sycophant Hex (the non-Hermione Snape fanfic), although I haven't had time to read fanfic in YEARS, so I'm not exactly up-to-date on good stories.

(Maybe he would enjoy The Sempra Deck by our own TeddyRadiator! ;) )

As a girl who loved older men from the time she knew the difference, SSHG totally made sense for me. Within the Wizarding standards of ages and maturity levels, I could totally accept this pairing right from the start, and although I've read other pairings since, and even have developed a fondness for Severus/Filch slash, Severus/Hermione still rings the truest bell for me.

I did enjoy The Sempra Deck, though ;) That was inspired, and even has a cameo by Dahlra Muse!

Took me a bit, but I found the trilogy I was lookiing for. It is not SS/HG, but a continuation of the HP series just after GoF. Yeah, it was written that long ago. And it's *damn* good! I met the author in person at Azkatraz :D Severus lives, gets his very own witch, mostly happy ending for all, but the sacrifices, twists, turns and horrible lessons Harry has to learn are far more real and, well, horrific than anything JKR wrote.

I highly recommend it if you haven't read it yet. And it's *LONG!*

The Psychic Serpent
The Time of Good Intentions
The Triangle Prophecy

Wow, thank you for going to so much trouble! I'll read it and pass it along too.

i am vastly amused, lol.

i had a big problem with the age difference with ss/hg, and only got lured in by the excellent writing. i'm basically a shipper rather than an adventure kind of gal, so i don't have much to recommend. my earliest story was a snape/lily totally inspired by the prince's tale, and i've written a few like that.

occlumency is a great resource for snape fic that isn't ss/hg. i remember reading snape/tonks and snape/poppy pomfrey there, and i'm sure there is gen fic too, lol. now, i don't know groom at all, obviously, given in point of fact i barely know you, lol, but there is this one somewhat deranged crack!fic that had me howling in my early fanfic days - just a thought: http://occlumency.sycophanthex.com/viewstory.php?sid=4032

oh, i just remembered - i have a story on occlumency that is my version of how snape lived that is one of very few i've written that don't ship him with anybody.

Re: the age difference...I always point out that my other half and I have the exact same age difference as Hermione and Severus and have been together for quite some time. So that is always a moot point to me!

Thanks for these recommendations! I'll check out Occlumency.

Thanks for this ammunition. I'll use it next time the age objection comes up! :)

To further fuel the fire...one of us is a Virgo, the other a Capricorn, and I've been with him since I was 22 and I'll be 29 this year. So HAH! hehehehe

(total sidenote, every time I see that you've beta'd for someone I cry because excellent betas are far and few in between and I think I have a better shot at finding a unicorn at this point)
