Our stay at the posh house by the ocean ended with the traditional dinner of leftovers.

I was in charge. After seeing what was left in the still-stuffed refrigerator, I set out sandwich makings, a few sides and a big salad. I held a wooden spoon and rapped anyone's knuckles if they took too little. It worked: by Friday morning the only food left was breakfast stuff. My husband coordinated a big omelet with two kinds of bacon + toast. I gave him charge of the wooden spoon but by then everyone had learned and they ate heartily. The fridge was practically empty when we left. I love it when the food comes together.

Since we were in Bodega, we had to watch 'The Birds' together one night, right? Sitting together making remarks tends to lower the overall suspense factor; still, that's a movie that stands the test of time. We had two 12 year-old boys with us, and they mocked the special effects. "Those don't look like real birds!" Well, they were real birds, li'l fellas - we explained that in the 60s, special effects entailed chucking real birds at the actors and having them react. Crude but effective - in the climax of the movie you can literally see Tippi Hedron about to have a nervous breakdown, poor thing.

Got home to find both dogs still alive, which was, y'know, important. Our dog-sitter hadn't been my first choice - she tends to cut corners in life. I was uneasy all week. But they looked fed and watered so she came through.

I haven't been to Bodega in donkey years...but I do recall stopping by that little church that was in The Birds. Kids are too funny nowadays. They are so spoiled/jaded by sophisticated computer graphics and special effects in films that they can't appreciate the classics.

re: kids today, it's a little sad for them - but i guess not really, because they don't even know what they are missing, lol.
