2013: a look forward

stgulikOne of my coworkers is 38 and is gunning for our boss's position. "I want to become a manager by the time I'm 40," she told me. To that end, she's giving herself a year to make it happen here, or else she will move on.
I admire her for having ambitious career goals. But I've never wanted to manage others. Like Dumbledore, when I get too much power, it goes to my head in negative ways and I tend to make life miserable for those around me. I'm better off in my specialty field. My goals involve getting very competent at the job I have now.
So, here are all my goals for 2013:
* Become the go-to knowledgable person for one particular area of public policy.
* Write at least one policy paper on this subject this spring.
* Walk 1-2 miles a day.
* Finish two pieces of HP fanfic that have been sitting here in my hard drive for the last few months.

* Finish beta'ing Teddy's Her Minder and Lay Me Low. (You can write fight scenes, Teddy. Rah Rah Rah! Go Go Go!)
* Learn about baseball to see what all the fuss is about. To that end, I'm going to pick one team (either the SF Giants or the Oakland A's so I can attend a game) and closely follow their triumphs and tragedies for one whole season.
* Make my own wand.

I wish your co worker luck. Getting promted is extremely difficult and often requires opportunity and a bit of luck and usually a lot of office politics. Like you, I just want to keep my specialist job.

Date: 2013-01-01 10:43 pm (UTC)I just make it my business to know the instruments and the software on the ones I use. The instruments themselves aren't usually a problem. It's usually the software glitches that drive people crazy.
