A Yuletide passenger

stgulikSanta Claus boarded the commuter train last night! I heard the buzz while I was hunched on my seat, solving the daily spider solitaire challenge on my phone. For a while, it was too crowded to see him, but what I did see at first was smiles. People who had caught sight of him would smile and exchange a few funny observations with strangers. It felt like the mood of the whole train car elevated just a little bit.
Farther down the line, with fewer bodies in the car, I managed to turn in my seat and see him.
Oh, my, he was splendidly dressed. His red and white suit was made of velvet, he had golden bells hanging from his belt, and boots, and real facial hair! When I was a kid, I learned to distinguish the Real Santa Claus from his legion of well-meaning imposters by the beard.
Real beard = Real Santa.
He was swapping jokes with two teenage boys who were very taken with him. I turned in my seat to sneak a picture. The boys saw me and ratted me out. They yelled, "No, no! Lady, you want a selfie with Santa! Take a SELFIE WITH SANTA!"
I'm here to tell you I'm rotten at selfies. Without fail, in the moment, I can't angle the camera to get both my face and the subject of my shot in frame. Rotten! So I laughed and said no, I was fine. But Santa! He stood up and came to my seat! We talked a moment, but I can't remember a word I said. The boys insisted on the selfie, and then hammed it up for the camera. Here's the result:
