So, like, that Christmas meme in the last journal entry, while fun, did not tell the entire story about my complicated feelings for Christmas. In fact, my attitude toward the season continues to evolve.

This year I asserted myself a little more than usual. For instance, when we put up all the household decorations last night, I held back a good third of them and quietly put them back in storage. Now the house, to me, feels enhanced by Christmas decorations, not burdened.

AND - I pointed it out to my groom, who told me he hadn't noticed the difference and doesn't mind. Score one point for my sanity, and award a point to my groom for keeping the peace.

Still, I couldn't hold back this little number, because I promised I would show it to you. See? You didn't believe me when I described the glory of its awfulness!

PMSL! That is so far into awful, it's crossed over into impressively awesome!

You CAN'T part with something that is in such bad taste it's cool!

It's one of those things that when your daughter (who it will be handed down to) puts it up in forty years time, she'll get a grimace that will turn into a fond smile when she thinks of your quirkiness, and so it will go down the generations to come.

Darn it, you and irishlass made me look at that hanging as quirky. Now I can never throw it away. (Though I will probably pass it along to my kid - after talking up its quirkiness, of course.)

LOL now that is something that is so ugly it is cute!

I don't do any Christmas decorating. What's the point I ask? It is only me and I don't want the hassle.

I did break down and send out 9 Christmas Cards that weren't actually included in a parcel. Isn't that impressive?

Happy scaled back Season!

That is so 70's retro-gross. It's almost charming. I lived through the 70's, so this is bringing back memories of that whole macrame fetch of the time. Especially macrame plant holders hanging from the ceiling looking like ratty hemp rope strangling a poor houseplant. And pompoms. Thanks for the flashback.

Yes, the jute macrame plant holders! My mom went through a long macrame craft phase. I was given at least one - I should search the house to see if I still have it.

There's an ass for every seat, as they say in the car business. I'll bet someone would buy it on e-bay; some people have a feeling of nostalgia for the seventies. I lived through them, too, so I don't get what was supposed to be so damned charming about that time period. I dated someone who wore a LEISURE SUIT, forfuckssake! I had Farrah wings in my hair! Oh, the horror....

Scaling back Christmas is easy if you do it a little at a time. First thing to go was all extraneous decorations except for the tree (which was actually a decorated hibiscus!). Second was the concept of a decorated tree. Third was scaling gifts down to one apiece, and eventually to none. Cards phased themselves out, as we only sent them if people sent them first. Christmas dinner, sadly was a victim of attrition: the relatives were all old and eventually died. There is just no reason to do it for the two of us. It is more stress than either of us need. We already are very anxious people.
