I'm spending tonight on a different computer, while my husband sits at the Desk of Doom, gettin' all defraggy with my laptop.

When we bought an Acer computer two years ago, little did we know it came with a shit-ton of "free" proprietary software, like games and shopping guides and other unnecessary things with names we can't even pronounce, let alone muster up the confidence to click on. And each of these programs has been automatically updating whenever they want to. AND since they don't constitute malware or viruses, my malware and my virus programs never flagged them.

Acer, you sick bastards. Wasn't it enough to get MY money - you had foist third party hucksters on me?

For those of you whose new laptops are inexplicably slowing down, this may be why. Contact a non-big box store computer expert to be sure. I say NON-big box store employee because it wouldn't surprise me if they're not allowed to mention all the parasitic programs in there.

Tomorrow: The aftermath of the HP party, and why Voldemort actually would be no match for a passle of teenagers.

Best Buy has a service where they remove all that crap, so Geek Squad is pretty safe to ask. What you can do for yourself is to open Add/Install programs in the control panel and look every single last one up. If it's not needed to run the damn computer and you won't use it, get rid of it :)

Smart. I should have done that first thing.

I have an Acer and when it came out of the box and was booted up, I deleted EVERYTHING that I didn't use or wasn't integral to running the system. If I wasn't sure, I googled! Luckily, I have a relative who does computer programming for a living and he advised me!

I do the 'uninstall everything I don't want' too.

I just formatted and restored a neighbour's laptop for them after they'd gotten a few nasties and did just that. Theirs was an HP and came with a lot of things they just didn't need or want. I also go through our desktop and laptops and regularly do a cull of programs that aren't getting used and aren't likely to be.
