Birthday party: the debrief
Feb. 22nd, 2012 09:15 pmAfter my daughter's Harry Potter-theme birthday party, I no longer have any doubt that Lord Voldemort could be defeated by a bunch of teens.

Two girls made the authentic Hagrid cake. isn't it impressive? The day before, they actually argued over the exact shade of pink to make the frosting. Ravenclaws! Am I right?
So, we played three games.
First was Pin the Lightning Bolt on Harry Potter (using a poster, a cork board, some straight pins and a mess of paper lightning bolts). That was a pretty straight-forward game, with winners.
Quidditch was next, but it quickly devolved into jumping on the trampoline while riding a broom, and having others take pictures so it looked as if the jumper was flying in midair. I have to admit, that was a fun idea in itself. We got some hilarious pictures.
And the scavenger hunt ... I'd have to say it could have gone better. The kids did accomplish the mission, and found all the Horcruxes, and had a good time. I awarded the team that came back first, though neither team accomplished all the picky things I had set them. The team that came in second had slow runners in their midst - a problem I hadn't anticipated. I felt bad penalizing them for waiting for their slower teammates, so I cobbled together a prize much like the winners got. My kid was a little put out with me. She thought giving awards to the second-place team felt like something that's done for younger kids who can't stand losing. Both she and I might have made too much of the situation. Nobody else seemed to notice one way or another - and everybody likes swag!
I have to say, though, I came up with some funny things they had to do on the hunt. My favorite was this: they found themselves at the door of one of my neighbors. She gave each team a bottle of "Amortentia." (It was really water made to taste like basil.) One brave person had to drink it and then kiss a teammate. I required a picture for proof. (All these kids have smartphones, so that was easy.)
Also, the team that found the baby Harry Horcrux had to carry the baby carefully for the rest of the game. I don't exactly know if they did, but I can sure tell you what happened to the doll later on:

Hard core!
(Thank you,
magicalpresence, for the pic of your cute "What would Severus do?" pin. As you can see, it's my new icon!)

Date: 2012-02-23 11:10 am (UTC)Believe me, I'm with you on having no problem with believing that a group of teens would have old Mouldyshorts quaking in his stylish and yet affordable boots, let alone the whole compliment of them from Hogwarts!
Teens...with magical power...*shudders*
The games sounded like fun, and I'm glad the Horcrux hunt was a success - I'd love to see some of the quidditch 'flying on a broom' pics - they sound great!
Poor baby Harry! PMSL!
Sounds like a great time was had by all - well done! I bet you and the hubs needed some recovery time though...

Date: 2012-02-23 12:13 pm (UTC)"What Would Severus Do?" has been the question I ask myself in difficult situations for a long time now. To which he answers me, sarcastically: "Yes... because MY life turned out SO well!"
