The end of an era

Back when I first got accredited on Perfect Imagination, and I was a green beta with no experience, I agreed to take on an angsty Dramione.

The author felt pretty sure it would be only 75k words or so.

One year, 54 chapters, and approximately a gazillion words later, I just now sent off the last pages.

We're done!

Brava, you! It's a sense of accomplishment that no doubt has a bittersweet edge, I'm sure.

And you'll be doing the same thing soon with Lay Me Low. It's a funny thing. I'll be glad to finish it, but at the same time there will be a great feeling of loss. I guess parents feel the same way when the chick leave the nest.

Oh, I'll be much sadder over the end of an era when LML wraps up. We really will have to celebrate here. But then there'll be so much to do afterwards!

Congratulations! Beta-ing takes a special talent that goes beyond just red penciling awkward phrases and correcting spelling and grammar. One must keep the continuity straight, the characters in character, all the while making these suggestions so deftly and tactfully to the author that you don't crush any fragile egos. I honestly would find that part the hardest -- being honest enough to say, "Hey, this doesn't work."
