I've been half-serious about changing jobs lately. Last month I applied for a position in a different agency, one that would require travel to San Diego and Imperial counties. If the agency hired me, they'd have to fly me down to Southern California on a regular basis, even in this age of cloud computing and conference calling.

The supervisor e-mailed me earlier this month to ask me, before they schedule interviews, if I would be willing to do extensive travel. I wrote back and politely said I was willing to travel, but I couldn't answer his question because I did not know how many days is considered "extensive."

Never ask a Ravenclaw for a yes-or-no answer.

I thought I'd blown my chance at an interview, but no: they've scheduled them for the last week of the month. The kicker: it's in L.A. Which means I would have to fly down on my own dime to interview, and to finally get an answer to my question: what constitutes "extensive?"

I asked for, and was granted, the chance to do my interview by phone. But it made me realize they obviously have L.A. applicants in the pool, and for the sake of their budget those candidates are probably vastly preferred. Plus, I've had a change of heart about traveling at all. So I may just pull out of the candidacy.

On the home front, I finally learned a computer program which has made the job I have so much easier, it's amazing. I had four projects in the queue, waiting on other people, and now I can finish them myself and make sure they're done right. It's made me feel more positive and more appreciative about what I have already.

Having the right tool for a task is a miraculous thing :)

Oh, I know. I feel like a bonehead for not learning it before.

p.s. if you do make it down to san diego some day, that is where i live, so do feel free to look me up!

It's always worth having the interview to find out that it's not what you want. It's always good to practise.

That's a good point. I'd get practice, plus the answers to the questions they've been holding out on.

Hi! Just sticking my big nose in and giving my Knuts worth--I also agree that maybe you could do the interview as an informative experience for you--specially if it is an initial phone interview... Best wishes for whatever you choose to do!

Pssshhht! Why can't they offer you something that requires extensive travel to TN?

Oh, yeah... because no one wants to be here.

I wish you luck with whatever you choose!!
