There's nothing like watching a scrappy Cairn terrier and a bad-tempered chihuahua going ten rounds when you're trying to watch baseball in peace.

They're loud, they growl constantly, and they take turns jumping on each other and bumping each other into the furniture.

Terrier: ::pushes the other dog with mighty force into the coffee table::

Chihuahua: ::growls ferociously, pushes back again the terrier, into ... my feet

Me: OUTSIDE, BOTH OF YOU

Dogs: ::ignore human in tandem::

If I can figure out how, we'll go to video some time this month.

goodness, that doesn't sound pleasant. have they always been at each other or is this a new development?

also, pardon me for asking, but are there good-tempered chihuahuas? not sure i've ever met one of those.

I met my first example of a constantly good tempered Chihuahua only a couple of months ago (and my grandfather bred them, so I've known a few) and, surprise, surprise, it wasn't just one, it was three!

I have a friend who has eleven of them (yes..ELEVEN!!!) and I went to her house for the first time recently (she lives a fair way out of town, so we usually meet in town or at my place) and met three of the most friendly, happy, easy going dogs I've ever met... and they were bloody Chihuahuas!!!

Her other eight, however, are the normal cantankerous little buggers I've come to expect. They weren't like that all the time, but it was constant bickering with them taking turns, it seemed.

They've always been like this. The terrier is a puppy and the chihuahua likes to play but he's had nobody to play with until now. They like it.

well, if they are having fun, i guess that's better than if they are really fighting, especially since you seem to find yourself in the middle sometimes.

and i suppose there have to be good-tempered chihuahuas since so many people have them, lol. the ones i knew when growing up were always sort of cantankerous and have colored my view of the breed, i suppose. there was a homeless man in my 'hood for a while who had a chihuahua, and actually that dog seemed more mellow. maybe that's it - i prefer dogs with more mellow dispositions, and chihuahuas do tend to be rather feisty.

I think there are good-tempered chihuahuas. I knew one that wasn't socialized to children, and he was the meanest little s.o.b. you ever saw. But most of them are friendly and feisty. They have clear boundaries and the need to establish them.

My two very elderly dogs get a bit stroppy with each other at times, usually when I'm just finding out who dunnit in a movie or some such - it's fun, isn't it? It's usually because one (usually the alpha) pursposely plonks himself down in a doorway or some such as a power play so my female can't get past.

My two don't actually fight - they just do the snap at the air and growly barking thing but it can be very annoying and distracting, can't it?

"Stroppy" is the word! Yeah, they provoke each other just for the effect, but it's harmless. They're a pack and they never (well, rarely) go after each other in seriousness.

Sounds like you need some Doggy Downers for your pooches.

Is it wrong of me to imagine them trash talking each other with Scottish and Mexican accents respectively?
