“It’s been two days, ma’am. I’ve looked everywhere in the castle. None o’ the portraits have seen ‘er either. She must be outdoors—that is, if she’s still…”
“Oh, Argus.” Hermione laid a sympathetic hand on the caretaker’s shoulder as he blew his nose.
“It’s not like ‘er to run off. Something must’ve spooked ‘er.”
“Peeves?”
“Not bloody likely,” he snapped. “Professor,” he added.
“We’ll find Mrs. Norris, don’t worry,” replied Severus.
“She can’t have gone far.”
Hermione improvised an incantation likely to reveal the animal’s whereabouts. The two professors set off through the gloomy woods, Severus in the lead.

After what seemed like an age, Hermione’s wand pulled left. A few seconds later, they met an old friend.
“Good evening, Professors,” said Firenze, stepping out from behind a tree.
“Hello, Firenze. We’re looking for a pet—Mr. Filch’s cat, actually,” said Severus.
“Ah, then your search is ended. Permelia missed me and came to visit. She is ready to return to the castle now.” The centaur turned. Seated high upon his back was Mrs. Norris, regal as a queen.
“Permelia? That’s not her name,” Hermione objected.
Firenze and the cat shared a secret look. “She would disagree,” he replied.
