Boy, the more I hear from friends and acquaintances on the internet, the more I think I must be part of the minority, because Daylight Savings has absolutely no ill effects on me. Never has. I have no idea what everyone else feels, or why it's always so hard on them. And I'm grateful! It sounds horrid.

It was a quiet weekend. Worked a little on our future guest bedroom. There are now four big boxes, filled and taped up. I borrowed a handcart from our next-door neighbor, and once the rain lets up, we'll transfer the boxes to the garage. Little by little, the job gets done. You may wonder why I don't make our daughter help with more of this project. The first reason is, she's tremendously busy with work and school; it's difficult to get her to schedule any time here. And the second reason is, she created this mess, but she's pretty useless about reversing the process. I mean, she's brilliant; she'll go far; I admire her in many ways. But whenever I put her to work on this room, she either gets depressed and can't part with things, or nostalgic and can't part with things. Progress is slow, to say the least.

And this is no job for Groom because his knees are so terrible, he could get down on the floor, but there's no guarantee he would stand up again. Please know that in the grand scheme of things, he does his share around the house, so I'm cool.

In fanfic news, I submitted prompts to the [livejournal.com profile] sshg_promptfest and put in a request for Draco/Hermione prompts on [livejournal.com profile] dramionelove. In case I didn't mention, the Dramionelove entries must be 1,000 words max, which works well for us commitmentphobes. Quite nice. Check it out!

Once again, the neverending paper, the one I've been working on for months, is done. On Friday afternoon we emailed it out to the client, and we invited her to let us know about any factual errors. My boss says she won't honor any requests for the addition of whole topics, though. The paper already has 40 pages and about 125 endnotes. If the client wants more on the subject, she can ask for a separate piece. I've covered everything in the original request, and frankly, my colleagues and I are collectively tired of the topic. :-)

My boss promised my next assignment will be on a more fun topic. How to get her to agree to let me write fanfiction ...?

In case you missed it, [livejournal.com profile] hikarievandar is writing her college thesis, which will be on how members of online fan communities feel about their representations in mainstream media. She's looking for people to participate in a qualitative interview by email. I've seen the interview questions and I'm looking forward to discussing this topic in some depth--but you know me; I'm a born ruminator.

You don't have to worry about confidentiality if you agree to participate. Your name and contact info will be held confidential, they will never be shared, and if you prefer, will be deleted right after the thesis presentation.

Let's help a flister get good marks on her thesis!

Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool, here's my take on a really good meme. Warning: I own a lot of music samplers written by Gen-Y artists who are not exactly lucky in love.

The Playlist Poetry Meme
Put your music player on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. The first line of the twenty-first song is the title.

Didn’t I treat you right now?

Oh, I bet I know what you like
I’m sure that he could give you everything
So I wait my turn, I’m a modern man
Through the sleepless nights I cry for you

You push me
Help—I have done it again
Here we go again

You played the part of the one who was taken down by God
You think you’re so cool
So like your father in the face and blood
On a dark desert highway
You walk around in other towns

It’s a terrible love
I heard you calling me across the night sky
You left me here on your way to paradise

Billy was a train driving man
Dead red eyes
Three in the morning
Oh, there’s a fire where the city was
Stare at the sun

The first manic throes of empty nest syndrome are over. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) a mild yet sticky cold slowed me down for a week, and now I'm thinking a little more calmly.

In other news, I bought a tiny, second-hand espresso machine at a yard sale. It's darling. I kind of want to name it, but I know that's just a symptom. Anyway, I know nothing about espresso-making. Do you buy special beans? Special grind? The instruction manual is somewhat vague.

It's Valentine's Day, and I'm happy to say my groom and I are celebrating by giving each other a 100% guilt-free pass on buying any cards, teddy bears, chocolate or flowers. We've already had a busy month, emotionally and financially. The nicest thing we could do for one another is a pleasant Sunday together, without props. At the agency Christmas party, I won a year's membership to the local history museum. We are visiting today and I am going to develop a system that lets me, in one year's time, learn everything in the museum. EVERYTHING.

The paper from hell is done. Its Drop-dead Due Date was yesterday, close of business, and we managed to get it PDF'd and to the client with ten minutes to spare.

Ten minutes, baby!

There was a little dancing, I'll admit.

Next week, we dig back in and format it for printing, but that's going to be comparatively easy.

It's been a while since I played the Three Things Meme. Let's dig in ...

Three Things You Want To Do Before You Die:
1.) Make a queen-sized quilt, all by myself, start to finish, without throwing the whole thing in my stash pile and ignoring it for years
2.) Visit Hong Kong
3.) Write a novel

The paper I mentioned in December, the one that was supposed to be finished Dec. 30, was given a much-needed extension. Reviewer comments showed us we had more investigation and more write-up to do. So our new deadline was set for next Friday, a week from today.

And then, we drink.

But wait! We cannot drink yet! Because the next day, my daughter moves out. Yes, she and her friend Ashley finally found an apartment close to campus and fairly close to our house (to take advantage of laundry privileges, I am informed). So I think most of the weekend will be taken up with helping them box up their stuff and hauling it to their new place. But after that! Oh, yes!

Rest in Peace, Mr. Rickman, and thank you for the magic.

but I never wave bye-bye.

So many people are sharing the David Bowie video that defines the reasons for their love and admiration. Here's mine. The yellow hair, the yellow suit, the nasty sax break, the dancing, the odd yet catchy lyrics. Mm.

See you later, Mr. Bowie.

It's 9:20 and I'm holed up in the Room of Doom.

My husband and I were watching West Wing earlier this evening when my daughter strolled through and casually mentioned:

a) she can't access Netflix on the TV in the family room, she hasn't been able to get on wifi for two days, and everything's running on the pricey 4G from about here ::gestures:: to the other end of the house,

and

b) she downloaded Windows 10 on her laptop last night and something's not quite working.

Both these things put my husband in an absolute tizzy. The wireless is borked AND someone had the audacity to download Windows 10 without his royal permission? I swear, he wouldn't have gotten this upset if she'd announced she was pregnant.

I decided it might be a nice night to vacate the common rooms and catch up on Tumblr. When I last saw them, my husband had set up my daughter's computer while she was watching a TV show on DVD, like in Pilgrim times.

Here in the Room of Doom, where the wifi works perfectly well for whatever reason, I just watched home videos of the Sense8 cast at a table reading. That means we are one step closer to a Season 2! omg omg omg I hastened to follow all the Sense8 cast members with Instagram accounts, because Season 2.

A package from [livejournal.com profile] teddyradiator was waiting for us yesterday upon our return from my mother's house. Our girl has been working hard at her job and decorating her house like a veritable Christmas elf, yet she still found time to knit me a scarf, hat and gloves for the winter!

They're lovely and just the thing. Thank you again, dearest.

a very happy holiday, in whatever form your holiday takes.

I ate too much, drank way too much, put little sweaters on dogs, told jokes, took pictures, open gifts ... but I didn't sing! That would have been over the top.

Looking around now, I see my room, and in particular my Desk of Doom,  is a terrible, terrible mess. Wow.

I see the [livejournal.com profile] sshg_giftfest has posted its reveals. I'm looking forward to reading pieces I didn't get to before now. This will be a delightful way to round out a month of delightful things. I hereby resolve to figure out where to leave comments on the multichap pieces. If you can offer a clue, please comment below.

Here's a fuzzy picture of Groom's choir, taken at intermission. Wanted to give you an idea of the size of the thing.

Came home last night to find my daughter had enlisted the help of a few friends to put up our Christmas lights. It especially meant a lot to my husband, who loves that sort of thing. But I'll admit, the house looks lovely. It was a very nice gesture on her part.

Sorry, no delights the last few days, unless you count my delight at seeing the new Fantastic Beasts trailer. OMG, it looks like it's going to be so cool, with its American magical sensibilities, its period costumes, and the beauteous Eddie Tremayne carrying a case full of mysterious beings ...

I was surprised at the 'meh' reactions I heard yesterday. It was just a teaser trailer, people, enough to whet your appetite for the movie, for new situations and characters within the JKRverse. I mean, the silly thing isn't coming out until November 2016. They can't reveal too much, too soon--it would kill the sense of anticipation. And it would step all over the build-up to 'The Force Awakens.' Obviously, there's professional courtesy between movie studios at work here.

No, I don't know what I'm on about either.

Stupid Report is kicking my ass. Groom and I are Christmas-bickering. Send hugs.

Saturday I was appropriately busy and productive. And the whole day culminated in a choir concert, so we were all out rather late. On Sunday, we Rested, and it was Good.

Sunday's delightful things included: being cozy and warm indoors during a storm; staying in pajamas all day; watching a whole lot of West Wing on Netflix; competitive snacking; and making crock pot pinto beans so we could have vegetarian burritos for dinner.

Bring on the week .....
stgulik: default icon (benita)
Have I mentioned December is a Time For Concerts? It's been this way all my life, from the time my father conducted high school band. Then I grew up and married an aspiring opera singer, and begat an aspiring composer. End-of-the year concerts are our way of life.

On concert days, this is my usual dinner menu. It contains no dairy (which clogs a singer's throat), a lot of protein, vitamins, and just enough carbs to kick-start the evening.

Appetizer: Orange juice
Dinner: Spaghetti marinara
             Baked chicken
Salad with italian dressing -OR- steamed broccoli
Dessert (optional): Sorbet, black coffee

For the vegetarian who doesn't happen to have to worry about her singing voice, I sprinkle cheese on the marinara and include fried tofu in the broccoli.

Anyway, I digress! Last night's delight was the annual Christmas concert, put on by our city orchestra and choir. The place was jam-packed with families wearing red sweaters. I chatted with one of Santa's well-meaning helpers--which, as you know, are easily recognized by their false beards.

I can't say I strictly enjoyed all the music. I think the choir director is trying to keep from getting bored with the usual fare by finding brand-new composers who spruce up carols with witty embellishments until the poor simple carols wind up losing their way to their own finales. His choices are starting to get too clever for the average ear. I must make a note to write to him; I'm sure he'll be delighted to take concrit from some random blogger.

Not to say everything on program was gratuitously esoteric. They did play Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride. Santa came up and did the thing: he tricked the choir director into giving up his baton and then conducted the orchestra for a while. I don't know why that never gets old for me. I might be entering my second childhood.
