In case you haven't seen it yet, here is the promotional brochure for Deathly Hallows 2, which is being distributed to SAG members voting in the upcoming awards. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] mickawber_fics, for generously scanning the booklet's pages for our enjoyment!

They're dreaming if they think they have a snowball's chance for Best Picture, Best Director, or Best Actor/Actress awards.

Their only chance is for awards for the supporting roles, and for the technical stuff.

Just sayin'...

Hmm, I wonder! I mean, Return of the King won for Best Picture, after the first two movies were snubbed. Maybe they'll nominate DH2 for Best Picture to acknowledge the Harry Potter movie series as a whole.

Though I grant you (before you say it), Return of the King was an epic masterpiece.

IMO, another realistic Oscar nomination would be AR as Best Supporting Actor.

Return of the King was a much better quality film, as were the previous two films, than anything in the Harry Potter series!

It's doubtful that DH2 will even get a Best Picture nomination, but if it does, that is all it will get, I stand by my assertion that it doesn't have any chance of actually winning...

Yep, see my comments above.

First off, they were starting with three books written by a much better author than Rowling is, Tolkien was a genius when it came to world-building.

Then they had the advantage of knowing what the ending was before starting to write the script and commence filming; the Potter movies had the disadvantage of the movie makers not really knowing where Rowling was taking the story.

I think sometime in the future the Harry Potter movies will be remade, and they will be far superior to the original movies if only because the screenwriter(s) and director(s) will know what the full story is, know what characters and plot points to correctly emphasize.

IMO, another realistic Oscar nomination would be AR as Best Supporting Actor.

Oh definitely a nomination for Rickman; I also see Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham-Carter and Jason Isaacs as nominees. The question will be if any of them actually win.

And when it comes to actually winning in the supporting roles, unfortunately it comes down to as much politics as objective analysis of any one performance. IOW, the Academy actually may be prejudiced against the Potter movies, hence even tho the above-named actors deserve serious consideration, I'm afraid they'll be shoved to the bottom of the pile soley because of the HP affiliation.

You have a very reasonable argument. I agree, Harry Potter doesn't hold a candle to LOTR. But even taking politics into consideration ... the HP franchise has been enormously lucrative for Warner Bros.; it's a cultural phenomenon; it spanned eight movies and IDK how many years, which is a lot of work. And giving the win to Harry Potter would make Academy Awards consumers - er, viewers happy.

So, all in all, I can definitely see a nomination for BP and can even imagine a win.
