Must everybody try to imitate the look and feel of Gmail? First it was Yahoo Mail. Now comes LiveJournal's spiffy new dashboard. When the Google robot overlords do arrive, I for one will refuse to +1 them.

In true Thanksgiving tradition, I waited until the last minute to make arrangements with family to split cooking responsibilities. Either nobody else was that bothered with the dilemma, or they were waiting for me to finally call and settle things for them. There's always one in the family, isn't there? The one who makes lists and calls around until everyone's coordinated.

Buddy's long-delayed memorial service will take place the Saturday after Thanksgiving. And I have a fashion conundrum. At work, my clothing style could be categorized as Thrift Store Professor - cardigans from Goodwill, striped blouses, grey or black slacks, sensible black shoes. Summer or winter, though in the worst heat in summer I sometimes switch to t-shirt under the cardigan, heh.

HOWEVER, in a moment of insanity last night, in preparation for the memorial service, I bought ... a dress. Sleeveless, with a bodice and flaired skirt, showing cleavage and everything. I will have to borrow a little jacket to wear over it for propriety's sake. But still! Girl clothes! I don't know what I was thinking.

well, just because you bought the dress doesn't mean you have to wear it, but i find the occasional foray into girl clothes good for my soul. ;) good luck finding the perfect little jacket to beg, borrow, or steal, lol.

I think I'll save it for a festive occasion, which this is not, and go back out there to look for something more subdued. My daughter, who is really the one who enabled the madness, will just have to understand. :(

Take a picture, I'm not sure we should believe this without some solid evidence lol

Y'know what? Wear the dress, without a jacket -- cleavage and everything. Let 'em talk.

*nods* And I fail to see what's so fan-freaking-tastic about Gmail in the first place.

Yay for dresses! Says the girl who can't find a single pair of pants that doesn't gap 5+ inches at the waist or show half a buttcrack in an upright standing position. ;)

If I couldn't wear jeans in the lab I don't know what I'd do.

I'm glad you treated yourself. Wear what you like, though, and wear this when it pleases you. Only take some photos so we can enjoy it too!

I couldn't agree more with the gmail thing - I was one of the soapboxers when yahoo did the change over - at least we got tabbed emails back. The trouble is, they think that everyone is 14 and uses the net via a phone.

As to your dress, I'm not sure what the style is, but a trick I use sometimes to make things a bit more sedate yet not frumpy is to turn a pair of pantihose or 40 denier tights into a sort of body stocking top you wear underneath. If you can find a nice pair (preferrably with a gusset in the crotch), either patterned or plain, you cut the gusset out, snip off the feet, do a little neatening and wear it under the dress (the crotch becomes the neck hole). I got this nifty trick from a dancer friend of mine many, many years ago and it's stood me in good stead. It can look surprisingly classy and at the same time covers your arms and cleavage enough to do the trick.

I'd suggest you practice with a cheap pair first, just to get the idea and sort out if it will work for that dress what you want to do neckline-wise. I find it works best if it's in the same colour as the dress to make it sedate. You can also use contrasts, but that tends to zing it up a bit and for a memorial, I'm assuming you wouldn't want that.

Oh! nearly forgot - get a pair that have the pattern all the way to the waist or are nude to the waist if plain - you don't want the darker panty bit showing.
